MTN 14th Avenue

The MTN Group Limited (MTN Group) is a leading provider of communication services, offering cellular network access and business solutions, and is listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) under the Industrial – Telecommunications sector.

Launched in 1994, MTN Group is a multinational telecommunications provider, with its core operations in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East, and as at the end of December 2008 had more than 90.7 million recorded subscribers.

The MTN South Africa Group has recently invested in an innovative new centre in the heart of its head office, the 14th Avenue complex. The new building hosts a Data Centre, a Test Switch Centre and a Tri-Generation/Energy Centre, bringing MTN 14th Avenue in line with the latest and leading technology practices in the world.

The new Tier 4 Data Centre comprises multiple active power and cooling distribution paths, and redundant components, ensuring that the centre is fault tolerant, and providing 99.995% availability. Therefore the data centre can sustain at least one worst-case, unplanned event with no critical load impact and the centre has an annual downtime of only 0.4 hours.
The Test Switch Centre’s main purpose is quality control. All equipment and products developed by MTN will be tested in the centre, ensuring that products and equipment of only the best quality are placed in the market.

The Tri-generation and Energy Centre is yet another addition to the “Greening MTN 14th Avenue” initiative. This green, zero carbon omission centre is responsible for generating power, together with heating and cooling the power. This process uses a natural, eco-friendly gas system, which drastically reduces the impact on the environment .The power generated through the system is distributed to the other buildings, making MTN fully self sufficient when it comes to energy requirements!

The Tri-generation Centre is one of the first of its kind in Africa and one of a few in the world.

This investment confirms MTN’s position as world leader in telecommunication in Africa.
